FAQs

Hi there! This is where I’ve put together answers to some of the questions people often ask about my counselling practice, how I work, and what to expect from sessions. Whether you’re thinking about starting therapy or just curious about how things run, I hope this helps make things a bit clearer and easier.

If there’s anything else you want to know, just get in touch — I’m always happy to chat!

Working Together

What kind of therapy do you offer?

I work integratively, primarily using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness-based approaches. CBT helps you understand how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours interact, and supports you in creating helpful changes. Mindfulness supports presence, emotional regulation, and self-awareness — helping you respond rather than react to life’s challenges.

What is your approach like during sessions?

I take a collaborative and transparent approach. We’ll work together to explore what’s going on, develop insight, and find tools that feel right for you. You're an active part of the process — you're the expert in your own experience.

Do you take notes during sessions? Can I access them?

Yes, I use a collaborative note-taking system using a digital surface (iPad). During sessions — whether online or in person — you'll be able to see the notes in real-time as we work through your thoughts, behaviours, and strategies. At the end of each session, you’ll receive a copy of the notes for your own reflection and reference. Many clients find this especially helpful between sessions.

How many sessions will I need?

I offer both open-ended therapy and short-term blocks of around 6–8 sessions, depending on what feels most helpful for you. We’ll have regular reviews to reflect on how things are going and decide together whether to continue, pause, or bring the work to a close. If you're starting with a short-term block, there's always the option to extend if more support is needed.

What should I expect in the first session?

The first session is a space to explore what’s brought you to therapy, what you’d like to work on, and whether we’re a good fit. As part of the process, I’ll ask you to complete a very brief questionnaire to get a sense of your current levels of mood and anxiety. This helps us track progress and will be repeated every 6 or so sessions to support regular reflection and review. There’s no pressure to have everything figured out — we’ll take things at your pace.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes — confidentiality is central to our work. What you share stays private, with a few exceptions. In certain situations, I may have a legal or ethical obligation to break confidentiality, such as if there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else.

As part of ethical practice, I also discuss aspects of my work with a clinical supervisor. These conversations are anonymous and focused on ensuring you receive the best possible support.
